Welcome

SASWC Interschools Regatta

Sponsored by Southern Charter
Venue, Imperial Yacht Club.

A highly successful and keenly contested annual dinghy Interschools Regatta took place this week-end at Imperial Yacht Club. Our thanks to Southern Charter for their sponsorship. 68 dinghys took part representing schools across the Western and Southern Cape.

Our congratulations to all the young sailors that competed. The start of racing saw a very strong South Easter on Saturday afternoon, it strengthened to almost gale force and the racing was posponed after the first race. The conditions on Sunday turned out perfectly with a gentle to moderate breeze that strengthened by race 4 and then moderated for the afternoon. 7 Races were sailed in total.

The overall winning school was Bergvliet High School who managed to topple the strong Bishops team that have had a stranglehold on the trophy in recent years. SACS came in third. The contest for the trophy was neck and neck all the way with coaches and supporters hanging on each result race by race right until the end.

There were many closely fought contests throughout the fleet, there were bumps, spills and tears but there were also thrills and elation as each contestant gave their all.

Imperial Yacht Club wishes to thank all the sailors that participated, Southern Charter, and all the members that helped make the event a great success.

  • Results: Southern Charter Western Cape Dinghy Interschools Results A brief explanation about the team results follows:The points scored are based on the high point scoring system called “Rinderle B”.The Junior teams compete with 3 members in a team – if a team is short, then a “Ghost” member is added automatically who scores zero points.  The team with the highest points wins. Senior teams compete with only 2 members in a team for the class competition – for this competition there is no mixing of teams within a school.  For example we see that Bishops finished 1st, 2nd & 5th in the Laser 4.7 class. The overall Senior team prize is more complex and involves the best results that the school managed to achieve.  The points of their ...

  • IYC Juniors shine again The Dabby and Oppie B fleet sailed well in variable conditions at a Milnerton Aquatic Club this last weekend. It was an exciting weekend with sailing conditions varying from very strong on Saturday afternoon to fresh on Sunday. The Dabby single class starred four sailors from IYC. Although Tim Manley had a shaky first race ending sixth, he recovered well with four 1sts to end top of the log. The fearsome Foreman brothers chased hard to get the next two positions. Although both Kevin and Jeremy both got a 1st, Kevin managed to squeeze five points in front to take 3rd place and Jeremy 4th overall. Christopher Thieme was the fourth IYC sailor in the field coming in at number ...

  • News Hi All On Sunday we had the 6 hour endurance race, unfortunately the attendance was low but there are two sailors that need a special mention!. Both are new Oppie sailors and they showed great courage and determination in completing most of the 6 hours. Well done and congratulations to Calvin Gibbs (1st place) and Mathew Thorburn (2nd place)! A big thank you to all the members that helped with the flag pole last Saturday, there was a good turn-out (Craig was excused after having walked the plank the previous evening!). Alex has kindly offered to do the final paint this week. Our aim will be to hoist the pole again this Sunday. Just a reminder that the TGIF ...
